“I’m constantly amazed,” said Lynne D’Autrechy, president of /buzzquake marketing, a web design firm based in Ellicott City, Maryland. “Historically, only about half of our customers have elected to purchase backup services. We find this surprising, especially given the nominal cost.”
/buzzquake offers complete backup and software maintenance services for WordPress sites for $25 per month. This includes one free restoration per year. If customers pay for a year in advance, they save 10%.
“Backing up a website to prevent loss is a form of insurance, and I think a lot of folks assume that insurance is generally overpriced and largely unnecessary,” said Frank Hazzard, a content strategist with /buzzquake. “But websites do crash. There are people out there hacking websites every day.”
”Perhaps only those who have lost their websites fully value backups, but when your site crashes without a backup, it’s too late,” added D’Autrechy.
/buzzquake tested several backup software tools and settled on BackupBuddy by ithemes as its preferred solution.
“BackupBuddy will back up your entire WordPress installation – widgets, themes, plugins, files and SQL database,” explained Hazzard. “You can schedule backups as often as you like and store the copies in a variety of places including Dropbox, Google Drive, a desktop computer or an FTP server.”
“And BackupBuddy is an easy way to move a website from one hosting service to another,” said D’Autrechy.
Going forward, /buzzquake will spend more time educating its clients about the relative costs and risks of forgoing backups.
“We cannot in good conscience allow our customers to go unprotected unless they fully understand their exposure and the benefits of website backups,” said D’Autrechy. “Nobody wins when a website is forever lost.”
